appointed to solicit funds for the purpose of building a belfry and buying a church
bell. The total cost was approximately $300. The Ebenezer Baptist Church had
united with the Scioto Baptist Association in 1838, but in 1916, the Scioto
Association was disbanded and the church was then admitted to the Columbus
Baptist Association. At the close of the first 100 years the church met for worship
and praise twice per month, led by Pastor N.B. Clibourne.  At that time the church
had a Sunday School and an active youth meeting.
In January 1935 a group of ladies met with Ruth Mather, president of the Columbus
Baptist Association, for the purpose of organizing a woman's missionary society.
They met in the home of Mrs. Arthur Smith in April 1935. Five women (Mrs.
Clibourne, Mrs. Ray Griggs, Mrs. W.O. Howdyshell, Miss. Ethel Howdyshell and Mrs.
Arthur Smith) along with Rev. Clibourne met to organize the W.M.S. The meeting
was held at the home of Mrs. Ray Griggs.
A log church was built in 1838 and was used till the present church was built in 1867.
The pastorate of John W. Miller was especially blessed with revivals and conversions.
At the close of the second decade under the pastorate of S.C.Tussing, the church had
grown to more than 60 members. The church has ordained three ministers from its own
congragation: S.C.Tussing, W.W. Marlow and A.B. Weatherby.  It also granted licenses
to preach to B. G. Bowman, George Hunsaker and John E. Geil, whom with his wife Eva
served as American Baptist Missionaries in the Belgum Congo, Africa for many years.
More recently, Tim Lehman was licensed to preach on November 12, 1975.
On March 24, 1903 a committee including William Davis and H.A. Wilson was
In 1837, just 38 years after the death of George Washington, the first president of the United States, a small group
including Henson Marlow, William Holmes, John Carfman, Elder Louis Madden and S.D. Alton met for the purpose of
establishing a church. These families began meeting in their log homes for prayer and praise. Preachers occasionally came
and preached for them.  In August 1838, a council met to prepare the articles of faith and they later adopted them after the
pattern of the Regular Baptist of Jesus Christ.  They voted to call their new church Ebenezer. They received members after
conversion, when they came forward, read and adopted the church covenant. Also in 1838,the church joins the Scioto
Baptist Association which eventually partners wirth the American Baptist Convention.
In 1937, Ebenezer Baptist Church celebrates its Centennial with over 500 in attendance for the Sunday service.
Many extensive improvements were made to the church in 1949 during the pastorate of Rev. Lawrence Sprankle.
These improvements included a full basement, which provided space for much needed Sunday School rooms.  A forced
air furnace was also installed to replace the wood burning stoves. In the early 1950’s, during the pastorate of Rev. Wilburn
Martin, new flooring, carpeting on the platform and aisle, and an electric organ were purchased.  The first wedding in the
church building was that of Jerry Dupler and Neva Coomer on September 22, 1957. The Rev. Don Scribner was the
officiating pastor.
In September of 1958 the church called Rev. Charles Spier, a
graduate of Dennison University and Northern Baptist
Theological Seminary to became the first full time pastor and in
November of that year, Ebenezer purchased property in Maxville for a
parsonage which remained in use for nearly 10 years. A new
parsonage was built near the church in 1968, during the pastorate of
Rev. John R. McDaniel.  The lot for the parsonage was donated by Mr.
& Mrs. Charles Wahl.  After more extensive remodeling of the church in
1972, the members voted unanimously on October 4, 1972, to build a
new church building, with an educational building as the first phase,
and a new sanctuary at a later date.  The completed new educational
building was dedicated in a special service May 26, 1974.  Rev.
Wilburn Martin pastor of the church during the planning and
construction of the educational building was the church pastor from
1971-75. Extensive remodeling to the interior of the sanctuary was
The vision for future ministry also includes a counseling center, lay Bible Institute, missionary care center, family life
center and conference facility, community park, a school of church music and an extensive local, national and global
outreach for the preaching of the gospel.  Our goal is to reach the world for Christ from Maxville, Ohio, a place many have
described as “the middle of nowhere.”  Praise God! With Him all things are possible!
From 1837 to present the history of Ebenezer Baptist Church continues to unfold.  Come grow with us and help write the
next page of our history!
In January 2007, after several years of searching, praying and asking, the church was
given 61.9 acres of land adjacent to its current location.  The church is grateful to the
many members of the Hazelton family who donated their portions and to Attorney Ed
Johnston of Logan, Ohio who donated hundreds of hours of legal work to assist the
church's acquisition of the property.

In 2008, we partnered with Baptist Builders for Christ to build Phase I (12,500 sq. ft.)

A Place Of Hope to Call Home
Beginning in May of 2008, the first of the Builders for Christ arrived on site to begin
the construction of Phase I. Through the month of November, over 700 volunteers
came to Logan to help build our new church.

On Sunday, November 23, 2008 members of the congregation gathered on last
time at the old church. After a couple of hymns and a show of appreciation for Pastor
Steve Hubbard, the church family walked to the new church for the first service. There
were 367 in attendance for this historic day.
