BUILDING PROJECT
In January 2007, after several years of searching, praying and asking, the Ebenezer Baptist Church was given 61.9
acres of land adjacent to its current location.  Over 50 family members of the Hazelton family from all over the country  
donated their portions of the property. We are grateful to the many members of the Hazelton family for their donations.
We are also thankful for Attorney Ed Johnston of Logan, Ohio who donated hundreds of hours of legal work to assist the
church's acquisition of the property.  Construction began in October 2007 on phase one of a two phase construction
project. Phase one is a facility that  includes a sanctuary that seats 300, nine Sunday school rooms and four offices.

OCTOBER 2007
F
ollowing the conclusion of Jubilee 2007, the church congregation walked to the site of the future church for a ribbon
cutting service. Members of the Hazelton family were on hand for the ceremony. In addition, the lane leading to the church
was named in honor of Mr. Ed Johnston.

NOVEMBER 2007
A
representative group from Baptist Builders for Christ came to Ebenezer Baptist Church the first weekend of November
to discuss the possibility of partnering with our church in the construction of new church facilities.
Baptist Builders for Christ is a group of volunteer workers who build churches across the United States. They  
constructed 75% to 90% of our new church building labor-free.
During the November 11th Sunday worship service the representatives from Baptist Builders for Christ made a verbal
commitment to bring a volunteer force in the spring of 2008 to help with the construction.
Three acres of underbrush and small trees were cleared on Saturday, November 17. This will enable engineers to shoot
elevations. Special thanks to Jimmy Stimmel who brought in equipment for this work to be accomplished.

DECEMBER 2007

reparations for site preparation continued during December. The  Building committee completed the final details on
the building plans.

JANUARY 2008
J
anuary saw a lot of behind the scenes work accomplished. The logistics committee met with Jim Sumners, logistics
stagiest. Mr. Sumners commended the group for being on track with the building project. Among the work done in
January was the finalization of blueprints, the marking out for electric service, cost estimations, sub contractor secured for
the slab concrete foundation

MARCH 2008

he Spring Coordination Conference was held March 15 at the church. 61 team leaders attended the conference. Team
leaders came from 10 states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Kentucky, Nebraska, Alabama, Kansas
and Nebraska. During the all day session, blue prints were reviewed, a time frame for construction was set and housing
and meal plans were discussed. On Sunday, March 16. Team Member made a public commitment before the church.
After the morning worship service on Easter morning, church members walked to construction site for the ground
breaking ceremony. Among those participating in the ground breaking were Pastor Hubbard, former Pastor
Charles Spier, and the building committee. Loren and Evelyn Howdyshell, the church's longest serving church
members also participated.  
The Stewardship dinner was held Saturday, March 30. A presentation was given by Roger and Dodie Carpenter of the
giving potential over a three-year period.
At the construction site, preparation of the land continued. The clearing of the right of way for the three phase electric line
was completed. We also had a donation of 500 gallons of diesel fuel and the use of a bulldozer.

APRIL 2008

he remainder of the timber was harvested and removed from the site. A 93,000 lb. mulcher was then brought in the
grind up the remaining trees that couldn't be sold. Site prep was finished and gravel was laid down for a driveway to the
site. Excavation for the footers for the church was completed and concrete was poured for the footers. Foundation work
began for the church. The kitchen tent was put up and trees were cleared for the electric line.

MAY 2008

he month of May began with only a foundation outline and ended with an ice cream social and worship service in the
new church sanctuary. The days in between saw the following: water, electric and telephone lines installed to the church,
the temporary kitchen was finished, all exterior walls completed, 95% of interior walls completed and 50% of the roof
sheet hung. After hanging for almost 100 years, the church bell was taken down and moved to the new site.
After Sunday school on Sunday, May 18, the congregation met at the new church site. A Bible was buried at the site of
the pulpit in the new sanctuary to symbolize that Ebenezer Baptist Church is built on the Word of God.
Friday, May 30 was a special evening. The first worship service was held in the new sanctuary. During the service, Larry
and Linda Brown renewed their marriage vows, Kristin and Morgan Godby  performed signing and several church
members and volunteer builders shared testimonies. The first hymn sung in the new sanctuary was "To God Be The
Glory". After the service, Builders for Christ hosted an ice cream social for the church members.

JUNE 2008

uilders for Christ and local crews continue to make great progress on the church. During the month of June the main
gas line was run to the church site. Roofing was completed and windows were installed. After hanging in the church tower
for nearly 100 years, the church bell was removed for future placement at the new site.
Other work progress: HVAC work began and by the end of June, 80% has been completed. Plumbing is 50% completed
and electrical work is 85% to 90% done.

JULY 2008

he new church facilities saw some major changes during the month of July.  Among the work done at the site included
the steeple being erected, insulation and drywall put up in the Sunday school rooms, offices, kitchen and bathrooms and
most of the siding completed. Soffit work was completed and bricks were laid on the outside of the building. Electrical,
HVAC and plumbing also was inspected and approved. The church bell was also installed at the new site.

AUGUST 2008

uring the month of August, the hanging of drywall was completed, and the remaining siding was installed.  The custom
made bookcases were put in the Pastor's office and library.  Cabinets were stained and hung in the offices, kitchen and
each Sunday school classroom. Exterior doors were hung. Tile was laid in the bathrooms. Ceilings were textured and
painted. Hallways, offices the library and classrooms were also painted.

SEPTEMBER 2008

eptember was another month of great progress. Outside work included the sidewalks  begun being poured, propane
tanks were installed and the tent, outside kitchen, showers and washing station were dismantled. Inside the church the
remainder of lights were installed, installed in all the bathrooms, sinks were installed in all the classrooms and kitchen, the
drinking fountain was installed and the painting of walls continued. In the Sanctuary the stage and sound booth were built.

OCTOBER 2008

mong the work completed in October: Bathroom fixtures and partitions were installed. In the sanctuary, acoustical
panels were installed, projection screens were installed and work continued on the stage and audio/video booth. Furnace
work was completed and fire alarm system was installed. Outside, sidewalks continued to be poured and trenching for
the parking lights were dug and  conduits and wires for the parking lights were pulled.

NOVEMBER 2008
PRAISE THE LORD!
We met in our new church facilities for the first time on Sunday, November 23.  Prior to this historic day, The finishing
touches were completed on the inside building. From the carpet being laid, to the bathrooms being completed, to final
painting of walls and construction of the platform and sound booth, workers did a great job on the new church.
During the week of our first service in the new building, Jubillee 2008 took place at the old church. Several special events
took place on November 23 including a final congregational song and pastor appreciation recognition at the old church.
Then the congregation walked to the new church. During the service, the first baptism was held and a slide show of church
construction was shown. 375 people were in attendance on this special day.

Ebenezer Baptist Church
The new Ebenezer Baptist Church facility was
dedicated Sunday, April 26, 2009. 354 persons
participated in the dedication. The morning
service was filled with prayer, praise and worship
as a grateful congregation praised God for
making this new facility possible, and recognized
and expressed deepest appreciation to the many
people who allowed themselves to be used by
God to bring about what at one time seemed to
be an impossibility.
The people of Ebenezer Baptist Church
gratefully and humbly realize that God has given
them this wonderful facility in which to worship
and to grow spiritually, and that doing so will

Tyler Stimmel.
Glen Carpenter then led the
congregation in the pledges to the
American flag and to the Christian
flag. After that, Diane Taulbee led
everyone in singing “God Bless
America".
A time capsule was buried under
a stone at the front entrance to
the church by members of the
building committee: Glen
Carpenter, Patti Edgar, Jana
Hartman, Mike Helber, Emery
Howdyshell, Debbie Stimmel,
Chuck Westenbarger and Erwin
Wolfe.       
The capsule will be opened in
2037 during the church's
bicentennial celebration . The
time capsule contains historical
documents pertaining to the
church, a Bible, names of those in
attendance at the opening service
and dedication service, notes
from church members and photos
of the services.
Chuck Westenbarger uncovered
two dedication plaques which had
been mounted on posts at the
front of the church.
One plaque acknowledged the
help of Builders for Christ. This
group supplied tools and labor
last summer to assist in the
building of the church.
The other plaque contained the
Latin phrases, Laus Deo, which
means “Praise be to God” and
Sola Scriptura which means, By
God’s Word Only. The first
phrase is also found at the top of
the Washington Monument in
Washington, D. C.
To mark the official opening of
the new facility a yellow ribbon was
attached between the entrance
pillars. After a countdown by the
congregation, Pastor Steve cut
the ribbon marking the official
opening of the new church facility.

equip and enable them to be used by God to
reach the world for Jesus Christ.
It is recognized that, with God’s enabling,
this new facility will be a place through which
God can accomplish great and mighty things in
conformity to His purpose and for His glory,
and the people of Ebenezer Baptist
Church joyfully and fully embrace this
expectation.
Following the dedication ceremonies, the
fellowship and rejoicing continued as those in
attendance enjoyed a lunch served on the
grounds under beautiful skies and in perfect
weather . . . A joyful conclusion to a joyful day.
